CompEx certification: units, validity and renewal

What CompEx proves, which units a technician needs, and how to keep it valid. Written by a contractor whose technicians work in Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas every week.

What is CompEx?

CompEx (Competency in Explosive Atmospheres) is a certification scheme that proves a person can safely install, inspect and maintain equipment in areas where flammable gas, vapour or dust may be present. It is accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 and based on the IEC 60079 standards. Oil, gas and marine operators in the UAE commonly ask for it before anyone touches Ex equipment.

Which units exist?

Ex01–Ex04 · GAS AND VAPOURSInstallation, inspection and maintenance of Ex electrical equipment. The core units for most electricians and instrument technicians.
Ex05–Ex06 · DUSTThe same work where combustible dust is present.
Ex11 · MECHANICALInstallation and inspection of non-electrical Ex equipment.
Ex12 · DESIGN ENGINEERSDesign of Ex electrical and instrumentation installations.
Ex14 · RESPONSIBLE PERSONSManaging Ex equipment and the people who work on it.
ExA / ExF · AWARENESS AND FOUNDATIONEntry-level awareness and theory for people who work around hazardous areas.

How assessment works

Candidates pass a theory assessment and a practical assessment at an approved centre. The full gas and vapour programme is typically a five-day course. Passing gives a CompEx certificate of core competence for the units completed.

Validity and renewal

A CompEx certificate is valid for five years. Practitioners who still work in hazardous areas can renew through the shorter Recognised Practitioner Programme (around two to three days) before expiry. If the certificate lapses, the full course has to be taken again.

Quick answers

Is CompEx mandatory in the UAE?

There is no single law, but operators and their specifications commonly require CompEx or equivalent proof of competence for Ex work under IEC 60079-14 and 60079-17.

What is the difference between CompEx and ATEX?

ATEX certifies equipment (and is an EU directive); CompEx certifies people. You need certified equipment installed and inspected by competent people.

Which units does an electrician need?

For oil, gas and marine work, Ex01 to Ex04 for gas and vapours. Add Ex05 and Ex06 for dust areas and Ex11 for mechanical equipment.
