Sandblasting and marine coatings: how we prepare an offshore deck

Most coating failures on rigs, vessels and barges start before the first coat goes on. On UAE projects our crews spend most of the job on surface preparation: removing rust and old coating so the new system bonds to clean steel.

1. Survey and specification

We survey the steel condition and agree the coating system with the owner or class: epoxy, polyurethane or a non-skid deck finish, with the target cleanliness and profile.

2. Abrasive blasting or power-tool preparation

Where open blasting is allowed, we grit or sand blast decks, hulls, tanks and structures. On a working unit where it is not, we use power-tool cleaning and grinding area by area under the permit to work.

3. Coat by coat, with readings

Primer, intermediate and top coats go on to the Jotun specification, with humidity, dew point and dry film thickness recorded for each coat.

4. Inspection and handover

The client receives a coating report with thickness records and product batch numbers in the same handover file as the rest of the job.

We have used this approach on Seafox units and on more than ten barges. See our sandblasting and marine coatings service, our projects, or send us the area and photos for a quote.
